Setup guide
How to Set Up Your Phone as a Dash Cam
A few careful setup steps can help your smartphone record a clearer, safer, and more useful drive with DrivioCam.
Before You Begin
You can use your everyday compatible smartphone or reuse an older phone as a dedicated dash cam. An older phone can be especially convenient because it can remain set up primarily for DrivioCam.
Best Setup Steps
Use a Sturdy Phone Mount
Choose a mount that holds the phone securely. Position it so the rear camera has a clear view through the windshield without unnecessarily blocking your view of the road.
A position near the rear-view mirror can work well in many vehicles. Make sure the phone is stable, since vibration can reduce footage quality, and follow local rules about windshield-mounted devices and driver visibility.
Connect Suitable Vehicle Power
Video recording can use significant battery power. For longer drives, connect the phone to an appropriate vehicle charging source.
Route the cable so it does not interfere with steering, controls, airbags, or your view.
Adjust the Camera View
Open DrivioCam and check the camera preview. Adjust the phone until the road ahead is the main part of the image, rather than too much dashboard or sky.
Set a Storage Limit
Open DrivioCam settings and choose how much storage the app can use. A specific limit helps prevent DrivioCam from consuming space needed for photos, apps, and other files on your everyday phone.
Configure Recording Options
Choose the settings that fit your needs, such as:
- Video resolution
- Clip length
- Audio recording
- Timestamp and speed overlays
- Motion sensitivity
- Other available recording settings
Start Recording Before Moving
Open DrivioCam and start recording before you begin driving. Once recording starts, DrivioCam continuously captures your journey.
Using Navigation on Android
If you need navigation while recording, use this workflow:
- Open Google Maps and enter your destination.
- Start navigation.
- Switch to DrivioCam and start dash cam recording.
- Switch back to Google Maps.
DrivioCam can continue recording in the background while you use Google Maps.
Important Safety Reminder
Complete setup before you start moving. Do not adjust the mount, search through recordings, or change DrivioCam settings while driving. If something needs attention, wait until you are safely parked.
After Your Drive
Open the DrivioCam gallery to review recordings, find important clips, save selected videos to your phone’s gallery, or share interesting footage.
You’re Ready to Drive
With a secure mount, suitable power connection, and a few minutes of setup, your smartphone can become a practical dash cam.
